When to Plant Trees?

‘When is best to plant trees?’ has always been a common question. It seems to make sense that trees are best planted in spring, because of the connotations of new life, and growth. However this is not true as, all trees are best planted in the winter. This is because the trees are dormant (less active) and the weather conditions are more favourable to plant trees (due to of the extra water in the ground). Trees can be planted in the summer but will need much more watering and attention. This is due to as the hot weather scorching and drying out newly planted trees’ leaves.

When to Plant Deciduous Trees?

Deciduous or broad leaf trees (such as Oak, Ash and Hornbeam) and hedges (such as beech, hawthorn and blackthorn) should be planted whilst dormant. Deciduous trees are dormant in the winter or early spring, you can tell a tree is dormant when there are no leaves and buds are not growing. The increasing amount of light in late winter/early spring and rising temperatures stimulates activity and growth.

When to Plant Evergreen Trees?

Conifer or Evergreen trees (such as Pines, Douglas Fir and Spruce) and hedges (Yew, Holly and Laurel) can be planted any time of year (providing watering is maintained).  This is because the conifer trees are generally active all year round. It is always best to plant during winter, as they are less inactive than in any other season.

When planting trees in the winter, one may not need to water them at all. Although, winter droughts can be as dry as those in the summer. All trees will need to be watered for at least one summer season after planting.
