What is Crown Lifting?

Crown Lifting is simply removing specific lower branches, this allows more space and better access at the base of the tree. This may be carried out to increase the clearance between the ground and lower branches. Crown lifting usually does not include the removal of large branches growing directly from the trunk as this causes large wounds which may jeopardise the long term future of the tree.

Why your tree might need Crown Lifting Pruning?

  • Lighting is poor because of low level branches of the tree. Crown lifting will allow more light.
  • Crown lifting will correct tree branches that are too low, over paths or roads, causing problems for vehicles or pedestrians.

Common reasons for crown lifting are to bring more light and provide clearance for pedestrians, vehicles, buildings or lines of sight. Minimum heights are usually dictated by local laws. In the U.K. common practice dictates clearance should be 5.2 metres (approx 17ft) for vehicles and 2.5metres (approx 8ft) for pedestrians.

Designed to raise the canopy of the tree to make more space for people, vehicles or buildings, crown lifting is the selective removal of certain branches to “lift” the tree. We use a number of techniques so as not to damage the tree; including reducing the end weight of hanging branches to create lift. We prune and remove lower branches very selectively and carefully so as not to create a top-heavy tree.
