How to Kill Tree Roots – Killing & Tree Root Removal Explained
Tree roots can cause numerous problems when not properly maintained and with so many different terms around it can be hard to know which solution is best for you. Therefore, I have put together a short guide to help shed some light onto how to kill tree roots, the methods to kill and remove tree roots and what options are available to you.
There are four main methods to remove tree roots; Root Grinding, Root Digging, Root Poisoning and Root Pruning.
Typically root grinding and root digging are grouped into what is known as “Root Removal” and this basically does what it says on the tin; removes the unwanted root. Root pruning allows you to effectively ‘trim’ back the roots; this does not kill tree roots but prevents them from spreading and damaging certain areas. Root poisoning on the other hand will kill the tree roots over a period of time, permanently damaging them and causing them to rot.
Tree Root Grinding – This method will kill the tree. Roots are chipped away at using a mechanical tree root/stump grinder leaving behind root chippings. These root chippings can then be used as mulch to aid decomposing, spread in your garden to help prevent weeds, or removed by Douglas Fir Tree Care. This method will remove tree roots immediately.
Tree Root Pruning – This method will not kill the tree. Roots are ‘trimmed’ away from the problem area and a “root barrier” can be put in place to prevent any future damage caused by the tree roots. Pruning is environmentally friendly and when pruned correctly can benefit the health of the tree. This method will remove sections of tree roots immediately.
Tree Root Digging – This method can be used to kill tree roots or to relocate the tree. Roots are unearthed from the surrounding soil using either mechanical or manual digging. To remove tree roots the digger unearths the entire root system, this can then be replanted or alternatively disposed of by Douglas Fir Tree Care. This method will remove tree roots immediately.
Tree Root Poisoning – This method will kill the tree. Roots are killed by creating a groove in an appropriate part of the tree’s living tissue. The root poison is then applied to the tree’s fresh wound, allowing it to be taken to the root system. The roots will then decompose over time. This method is the least effective and will not remove tree roots immediately.
Trees residing near other vegetation should not be poisoned. This is due to the transferral of poison that may take place. This is especially important if there are nearby trees or shrubs of the same species.
